Yesterday – November 25th – was the International day for the elimination of violence against women and girls.  It’s also called White Ribbon Day and you may have noticed people in the streets with little white ribbons pinned to their lapels.

It’s a day dedicated to recognising and celebrating the hard work and determination of individuals and women’s organisations all over the world who are fighting to end violence and discrimination. It’s also a day for taking stock of the challenges ahead of us and making plans for the future.

So following many months of writing letters, signing petitions, phoning councillors and taking part in consultations, what better day for us to find out that London Councils have decided to maintain IKWRO’s funding?  This means that over the next two years we will continue to receive a vital grant of almost £30,000 through the Women Together Against Abuse project, to support our work with women and girls facing domestic abuse, honour based violence, forced marriage and female genital mutilation.

The fact that London Councils have decided to save our Women Together Against Abuse funding is a testament to how important and valuable the work we do is.  It’s also down to the massive support which all of you have shown us, by taking part in the campaign and spreading the word to your friends.

The International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and Girls may have passed,  but there’s still cause to celebrate.  If you signed the petition, shared our articles on your website or facebook page, phoned a councillor or did anything else to help, then you’re part of the success and we want to say a big thank you.  Some might say it’s only a small step, but we know it’s an important one which will make a big difference to the lives of women in London.

Now let’s keep at it.  Together we can end violence against women for good.
